Ecliptic Brewing

Ecliptic Brewing: 825 N Cook St, Portland

I drank: Spectra Hoppy Pils, a crisp and bright brew with just a touch of hop bitterness.

She drank: Phobos Single Hop Red Ale, a rich and caramely red with a balance malt profile and citrusy hop aroma.

Ecliptic has pretty much become a staple here in Portland, but there was plenty to learn on our quick stop in! Now, I have been here a number of times to kick a few back and a few more times for super awesome fundraisers and outdoors events, but this time was business. I have to make it sound serious, otherwise nobody will take beer seriously…

The first thing anyone is going to notice about Ecliptic is the space theme. Honestly, I never took the time to learn why there was a theme, I just kinda figured someone made that decision one day and stuck with it. Turns out, it really helps to pay attention because the real answer is very obvious (it’s literally printed on the back of the menu)… I’m going to go ahead and blame my negligence on the fact that I was too busy enjoying my beer to read.

To quote the ever helpful menu, “The name Ecliptic Brewing unites John’s two passions: brewing and astronomy. The ecliptic is earth’s yearly path around the sun.” That is a heck of a lot cooler than just picking a random name and theme and sticking with it! According to the continued description, the menu rotates every six weeks based on the old world calendar. The more time you take to learn about this stuff, the more you realize how seriously they take it and I love the dedication!

Their building also offers a good amount of learning opportunity, but I want you to go in and find it! My clue is to pay attention to the lights… The brewery is located just a block off of one of the more trendy streets in Portland and makes a great spot to start and end a day of doing hip things in a hip neighborhood with hip people. There is tons of open space inside and a beautiful patio that is prime on a summer day. The bar and dining room are separate, so there is ample space for the kids and those who prefer to avoid them.

The merch section stays right on theme with some killer space oriented items, but also offers some choices for the less space educated like me! There’s always a nice little selection of bottles and cans to take home and, of course, they’ll fill your growler for you.

Go here for:

  1. The ever changing beer lineup and experimental brews

  2. Awesome seasonal menus

  3. A great atmosphere, no matter what you’re looking for

Ecliptic will always have a spot in my heart for some the events that I have been to and experiences I have enjoyed there. They know their beer and astronomy, but they love their neighborhood and I’m always a fan of that. I really hope you get to make memories and enjoy beers at Ecliptic soon!
